Chapter 3 - The Engineered Narrative

Victoria descended the stairs not with the panicked stumble of a mother whose child had almost died, but with the calculated grace of an actress hitting her mark. Her face was contorted into a mask of absolute horror and righteous fury, her fingers trembling as she pointed directly at Elena, who was still kneeling on the marble floor with baby Leo clutched safely in her arms.
"Get out of my way right now!" Victoria shrieked, shoving past Elena with unnecessary force, snatching the baby away as if Elena were a dangerous threat rather than the person who had just saved his life.
Elena blinked, her chest heaving as she tried to process the surreal hostility crashing over her. "Mrs. Vance—please, I just—"
"Please stop! You will hurt the baby!" Victoria yelled louder, projecting her voice toward the upper landing where footsteps were rapidly approaching. She clutched Leo tightly, rocking him dramatically while manufacturing tears that shimmered convincingly in the overhead chandelier light.
"Get out of my sight!" Victoria spat, glaring daggers down at the housekeeper.
Elena slowly climbed to her feet, her legs shaking from the physical impact of the fall. "Mrs. Vance, what are you doing? I caught the stroller in time! If I hadn't jumped, the carriage would have smashed at the bottom!"
The heavy thud of Mark Vance’s footsteps echoed across the upper landing as he rounded the banister, his face pale with shock. He had heard the commotion from his study, but the sight that met his eyes froze him in his tracks: his wife sobbing hysterically in the foyer, holding their crying son, and his housekeeper standing over them with a flushed, panicked expression.
"Victoria! What on earth is going on here?!" Mark demanded, his voice booming through the cavernous hall as he hurried down the stairs, taking them three at a time.
Victoria turned her tear-stained face toward her husband, burying her face momentarily against his shoulder before pulling back just enough to look deeply into his eyes. "Mark! Thank God you're here! It was horrific!"
"What happened?" Mark asked, his gaze darting between his wife and Elena, his jaw tightening as the protective instincts of a father flared to life.
"She tried to kill our baby!" Victoria shrieked, the accusation hanging in the air like a poisoned dart.
Elena staggered back a step, the sheer absurdity of the claim striking her like a physical blow. "What?! That is a complete lie! I saved him!"
"Victoria pushed my baby down the stairs!" Elena shouted back, her voice echoing with indignation and raw shock.
"Don't you dare lie and try to turn it around on me!" Victoria sobbed hysterically, clinging to Mark’s arm. "I was standing right here, and I saw her! She walked over to the landing, grabbed the stroller, and shoved it down the stairs while laughing! I screamed at her to stop, but she did it anyway! If I hadn't lunged forward and tried to grab it, he would have been killed!"
Mark stared at Victoria, his mind reeling as the horrific mental image took root. He looked at Elena, his eyes turning to hardened glass. The betrayal and fury crashing over him were absolute.
"What on earth did you do, Elena?!" Mark roared, stepping between his wife and the housekeeper, his fists clenched at his sides. "How could you do something so monstrous?!"
"I did not push her, I saved her!" Elena pleaded, her voice breaking as she looked frantically between them, realizing the trap that had just been sprung around her. "Ask the staff! Check the security cameras! I threw myself down those stairs to catch him!"

"Lies! Pure, wicked lies!" Victoria wept, burying her face in her hands. "Fire her and call the police right now, Mark! I won't spend another second under the same roof as this psychopath!"
Mark’s chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged breaths. He looked at Elena with absolute disgust, the illusion of her loyal service shattered in a single moment. "You almost destroyed my entire family," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with controlled fury. He pulled out his phone with a shaking hand, his thumb hovering over the keypad. "Consider yourself fired. And you're going to explain your actions to a jail cell."
