Chapter 7 - A New Horizon

The morning air outside the Vance estate was crisp and smelled faintly of blooming jasmine and wet grass. The sun was just cresting the horizon, painting the sky in soft strokes of amber, lavender, and rose. Elena stood by the front gates of the grand property, a single duffel bag resting on the cobblestone pavement beside her feet.
She took a deep, cleansing breath, filling her lungs with the untainted morning air. For the first time in five years, she felt completely weightless. The golden cage of the Vance estate was behind her, and while the road ahead was uncertain, it belonged entirely to her.
A sleek black sedan pulled up smoothly to the curb, and the rear door opened. Lily stepped out, her backpack slung over one shoulder, holding a cardboard box containing a few personal mementos from her bedroom.
"You're actually leaving?" Elena asked, surprised, stepping forward to meet the teenager.
"I'm done, Elena," Lily said, her jaw set with a fierce, independent determination that reminded Elena so much of her own spirit. "Dad is a wreck, and he’s finally waking up to the toxic mess he allowed into our lives, but I need some space. I’m going to stay with my aunt in Seattle for a few months to finish out the semester. I couldn't leave without saying goodbye properly."
Elena wrapped her arms around Lily in a warm, lingering hug. "I'm proud of you, Lily. Standing up to your mother took a lot of courage. Don't ever lose that voice."
"I learned it from watching you," Lily smiled softly, pulling back and wiping away a stray tear. "What are you going to do now? You didn't take Dad’s hush money, so you must have a plan."
"I do," Elena said, her eyes shining with quiet excitement. "I’ve been saving my wages for years, and with the severance package the estate's legal department automatically processed this morning, I have enough to finally open my own bakery downtown. It’s been my dream since I was a little girl."
"A bakery!" Lily’s face lit up. "You have to let me help design the logo! And I want first dibs on whatever you bake."

"It's a deal," Elena laughed, picking up her duffel bag as a taxi she had called pulled up behind Lily's sedan.
As Elena slid into the back of the cab, she looked back one last time at the towering iron gates of the Vance estate. The grand mansion looked smaller now, reduced to a mere building stripped of its glamorous illusions. She closed the car door, signaling the driver to move forward, her heart light and her mind clear. She wasn't running away; she was running toward her future.
