Chapter 4 - The Digital Witness

The cold, sterile air of the grand foyer seemed to trap the very breath in Elena’s lungs. Mark’s thumb hovered over the screen of his phone, ready to dial emergency services, his face locked in a mask of unforgiving wrath. Victoria stood slightly behind him, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief, a silent, triumphant smirk flashing across her lips when Mark’s back was turned.
Elena stood frozen, her mind racing. She knew the security cameras in the foyer covered the entire staircase and landing. The truth was right there in the digital logs of the estate’s surveillance system. All she needed was a moment for someone to look at the footage. But Mark was too blinded by Victoria’s theatrical performance to listen to reason, and Victoria was rushing him to seal her fate before any evidence could be reviewed.
"Mark, please," Elena pleaded, taking a half-step forward, her hands raised in a gesture of absolute desperation. "Just look at the security monitors in the security office. The cameras caught everything. You will see that Victoria was standing by the console and her bag hit the stroller. I risked my life to catch it!"
"Shut up!" Mark barked, stepping forward to physically shield his wife. "You think I'm going to let you buy time with your pathetic excuses? The security system was down for maintenance this morning, Elena. Don't take me for a fool."
Elena’s heart plummeted. The system was down? She remembered the IT technician being on-site yesterday, but she didn't know if the cameras were still offline. Was this all meticulously planned? She looked at Victoria and caught a fleeting, cold glint of satisfaction in the older woman's eyes that confirmed her darkest suspicion: Victoria knew the cameras weren't recording.
"Dad, wait! Look at my phone screen right now!"
The sharp, clear voice cut through the tense atmosphere like a knife.
Mark froze, his finger pausing on the keypad. Victoria’s triumphant expression instantly fractured, draining of all color as she whipped her head around toward the staircase.
Standing on the landing halfway up the stairs was Lily, Mark and Victoria’s sixteen-year-old daughter. Lily’s dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and her expression was a mix of intense anger and profound disgust as she held her smartphone up high, the glowing screen illuminating her face in the dimming light of the foyer.
"Lily, go to your room right now," Victoria snapped, her voice losing its fabricated fragility and snapping into a sharp, panicked command. "This is adult business, and—"
"I said, look at my phone screen right now, Dad!" Lily interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute authority as she began walking down the stairs, keeping the screen pointed directly at her father.
Mark stared at his daughter, completely taken aback by her sudden intervention. "Lily, what are you talking about? Put your phone away. Your mother is—"
"What is on this video screen, Lily?" Mark asked, his tone shifting from blind rage to sudden, creeping confusion as he noticed the fierce, unyielding look in his daughter's eyes.
Lily stopped three steps from the bottom, her thumb pressing play on the video file. "Watch Victoria push the stroller on video!" she declared loudly, angling the screen so both Mark and Elena could see it clearly.

The breath caught in Mark’s throat. On the small screen, high-definition footage played back with startling clarity. It showed the upper landing from an angle near the study door—an angle the formal security cameras didn't even cover. It showed Victoria aggressively swinging her designer handbag, clipping the stroller, and watching it roll over the edge. It clearly captured Victoria stepping back, making no move to help, and then instantly shifting into a theatrical pose of hysteria as Elena sprinted into frame to save the baby.
The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.
