Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

The ambient hum of the refrigerator in the distant kitchen seemed deafening as the video looped silently on Lily’s phone screen. Mark stood motionless, his eyes locked onto the glowing display. The pixels painted a brutal, undeniable portrait of deception. Every dramatic sob, every fabricated accusation, every tear Victoria had manufactured just moments ago dissolved into thin air, leaving behind the ugly, naked truth.
Mark slowly turned his head to look at his wife. The color had completely drained from Victoria’s face, leaving her powdered skin looking chalky and gray. Her lips parted slightly, but no sound came out. The pristine, untouchable facade she had spent years constructing was crumbling into dust before her very eyes.
"Victoria..." Mark’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a weight heavier than a shout. It was the sound of a foundation cracking open. "Did you... did you record this?"
"Mark, listen to me, that—that's not what it looks like!" Victoria stammered, her hands fluttering frantically as she tried to grab his arm. She flinched violently when Mark yanked his arm away from her touch as if she carried a plague. "Lily is editing things! She hates me! She’s always trying to undermine me with AI tools or special effects—it’s a deepfake, Mark! You know how tech-savvy kids are these days!"
"Dad, I was sitting on the balcony doing my art project with my iPad," Lily interjected, her voice cold and steady as she stepped down the remaining stairs to stand beside Elena. "I wasn't looking at them at first, but I heard the crash and looked up just in time to catch the whole thing on my rear-facing camera while I was recording a time-lapse of my sketch. There are no edits. It’s raw footage."
Mark looked back down at the screen, watching the loop play again. He saw Victoria’s calculated smirk just before she began screaming. He saw her deliberately step out of the way.
"You lied to me," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave, resonant with a quiet, terrifying fury. He turned fully toward his wife, the realization of how close he had come to destroying an innocent person—and firing the woman who had just saved his infant son’s life—crashing over him in a tidal wave of guilt and disgust. "You lied to me this whole entire time."
"Mark, please, think of our family! Think of our standing in the community!" Victoria hissed, her voice losing all pretense of sweetness as panic turned her into a cornered animal. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Lily, then at Elena. "They're conspiring against me! Both of them! You're going to let a common maid and an ungrateful teenager ruin everything we've built?!"
"You lied to me," Mark repeated, his voice devoid of any remaining warmth or hesitation. He pulled out his phone again, but this time, he didn't dial emergency services for Elena.
Victoria lunged forward, trying to slap the phone out of his hand, but Mark sidestepped her with cold precision. He brought the phone to his ear, his eyes fixed on the woman he had trusted for a decade.
"Hello? Yes, this is Mark Vance," he spoke into the line, his voice remarkably steady. "I need local law enforcement at my residence immediately. My wife... my wife has committed filing a false police report, assault, and child endangerment."
Victoria shrieked, a feral sound of absolute defeat, and lunged toward the front door, but the heavy oak panels were already blocked by the arrival of two uniformed police officers who had been responding to the initial panic button alert Mark had accidentally triggered moments earlier.

As the officers stepped into the foyer, their boots clicking against the marble, Victoria stumbled back, her designer clothes suddenly looking like a prison uniform in miniature.
"Victoria, you are under arrest," the lead police officer stated calmly, stepping forward and pulling out a pair of metallic handcuffs that gleamed coldly under the chandelier.
