Chapter 2 - The Red Silk Viper

A woman in a stunning dark red dress stepped quickly forward from the shadows of the arched entryway, her heels clicking a sharp, rhythmic warning against the floor. Her name was Evelyn, and she was his beautiful new fiancée, a woman celebrated in society columns for her impeccable taste, aristocratic lineage, and ruthless social ambition. She wore a perfectly practiced smile of deep maternal concern, an expression that failed to reach her cold, calculating eyes. She placed a highly manicured hand gently upon Andrew's arm, her touch deliberate and possessive, designed to signal to any observer that she was the mistress of this domain.

She immediately tried to manipulate the narrative of the room, her voice smooth and honeyed, dripping with a false sweetness that Andrew usually found tolerable in social settings, but today found utterly nauseating. She told Andrew that the young boys were simply confused, their minds playing tricks on them in the wake of a minor household disturbance. She claimed it was just a silly and unfortunate misunderstanding, suggesting that the servant had somehow wandered into a restricted area and the children had mistaken her silhouette for someone else in the dim lighting of the hallway.

She called the weeping maid a complete and total stranger, dismissing her with a flick of her wrist as if she were a piece of refuse that had somehow tracked mud onto the pristine carpets. Andrew did not look at Evelyn or acknowledge her touch; he stood entirely rigid, refusing to give her the validation she sought. He completely ignored the sickening smell of her expensive French perfume, a cloying scent of jasmine and heavy musk that suddenly felt suffocating in the open space.

Instead, he kept his dark and calculating eyes locked on the servant, refusing to let the distraction of his fiancée divert his attention from the core mystery unfolding before him. The maid was desperately hiding her scarred face from him, turning her head away and pulling the tattered gray fabric of her collar higher up her neck, trying to make herself as small as humanly possible. She was trembling violently like a trapped and wounded animal cornered by a predator, every muscle in her emaciated frame shaking with a terror that went far beyond mere fear of losing a job.

Something was horribly and fundamentally wrong in his perfect mansion, a glitch in the matrix of his controlled reality that defied simple explanation. Evelyn’s sweet voice sounded exactly like toxic static to him, a meaningless buzzing that grated on his nerves and amplified the warning bells ringing in his mind. He forcefully brushed Evelyn's hand off his expensive suit jacket, a sharp, public rejection that caused her carefully maintained smile to twitch with genuine anger for a fraction of a second.

He took a slow and deliberate step closer to the crying woman, ignoring the gasps of the surrounding staff who had gathered at a safe distance to watch the confrontation. He needed to hear the absolute truth from his own sons, refusing to rely on the polished lies of the woman standing beside him. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with an electric tension as Andrew knelt down to the level of his children, his shadow falling over the small group on the floor like a shroud.
