Chapter 5 - The Cage in the Attic

The revelation hung in the air like poison gas, choking every person standing in the opulent hallway. The staff members who had gathered to watch the drama unfold began to murmur among themselves, casting terrified glances between Evelyn and the billionaire whose wrath was now legendary within the household walls.

Sarah’s voice, though frail, carried a quiet, steel-like resilience that commanded the room far more effectively than Andrew’s shouting ever could. She recounted the horrifying sequence of events that began the night of the tragic accident three years ago. She had returned to the estate late, having survived the initial collision with minor injuries while the vehicle she had lent to the new nanny had plunged off the cliffside road.

When she arrived at the wrought-iron gates of her own home, expecting comfort from her husband, she had been intercepted not by Andrew, but by Evelyn—then a rising socialite angling for a position in Andrew’s social circle—and the head of household security. They had immediately recognized the opportunity presented by the misidentified corpse in the morgue.

Threatened with the institutionalization of her twin boys and the total destruction of her family, Sarah had been forced into an impossible choice. Evelyn, wielding fabricated medical reports and leveraging Andrew’s profound grief, had blackmailed her into silence, stripping away her identity, her name, and her status.

They had relegated her to the lowest tier of the estate's domestic staff, dressing her in hand-me-down uniforms, forbidding her from speaking to her own children, and locking her in the windowless servants' quarters beneath the stables every single night. For three long years, she had watched her sons grow from afar, forbidden from wiping their tears when they scraped their knees, forced to listen to their muffled cries through the floorboards while Evelyn played the role of the benevolent stepmother-in-waiting.

"She told me if I ever revealed myself," Sarah whispered, her gaze shifting briefly to where Evelyn stood trembling against the mahogany door, "you would have me arrested as a madwoman, Andrew. She said you didn't love me anymore... that you had already replaced me in your bed and in your heart."

Andrew listened to every word, each detail acting like a physical blade twisting deeper into his chest. The grief he had carried for three years mutated instantly into a white-hot, blinding rage—not at Sarah, not at the cruel twists of fate, but entirely at himself for his blindness, and infinitely more, at the woman he had allowed to poison his life.

He slowly stood up to his full height, towering over the terrified gathering, his shadow seeming to swallow the light of the grand hallway. The stoic, untouchable billionaire was gone, replaced by a man driven solely by vengeance and a desperate, clawing need to make things right.

He didn't yell; he didn't make grand theatrical gestures. Instead, he turned his head slightly toward the dark corner of the hallway where the head of security stood frozen in his uniform.

"Lock the gates," Andrew said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying the dead weight of an executioner's verdict. "Nobody leaves this property tonight. Not a single car, not a single person."
