Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past

The face looking back at him was not that of a stranger, nor was it the face of a random trespasser or a negligent servant plucked from the employment agencies Evelyn favored. The scarred skin, the distinctive shape of the brow, and the deep, sorrowful amber eyes belonged to Sarah—his legally declared dead wife, the mother of his twins, the woman he had buried in a lavish, tear-filled ceremony three years ago.

Andrew’s jaw went slack, the powerful, commanding presence he projected to the world instantly evaporating, leaving behind a hollowed-out man staring into the impossible abyss of a grave that had never held a body. "Sarah..." the name barely escaped his lips, a pathetic whisper torn from the depths of a soul that had believed itself permanently crippled by loss.

Evelyn let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that sounded entirely unhinged, stepping back as if she had just seen a literal ghost materialize from the ether. "Don't be absurd, Andrew! That's a trick! It's a plastic surgery job, or an impostor hired by your business rivals to destabilize you before the merger!" Her voice rose in pitch, betraying the rising panic that threatened to expose the intricate web of deceit she had woven since entering his life.

She lunged forward, her long fingernails aimed at the woman's face, intent on scratching away the proof before Andrew could process the undeniable truth. But Andrew moved with terrifying speed, his hand shooting out to catch Evelyn’s wrist in an iron grip that made her shriek in pain. He twisted her arm back just enough to immobilize her, his eyes burning with a dark, incandescent fury that caused Evelyn to freeze, her face draining of all color.

"If you touch her again," Andrew whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal promise that chilled the very marrow in Evelyn’s bones, "I will ensure you never walk free in this city again."

He dropped Evelyn’s wrist as if it were contaminated, turning his complete, undivided attention back to the woman kneeling on the marble floor. Sarah was weeping openly now, no longer trying to hide her face, her shoulders shaking as the years of torment, isolation, and silent endurance broke through her defenses.

"You're dead," Andrew breathed out, reaching out with a trembling hand, his fingertips hovering inches from her scarred cheek, terrified that if he touched her, she would dissolve back into the smoke and mirrors of his nightmares. "We identified the body... the dental records... the car had burned beyond recognition..."

Sarah finally spoke, her voice raspy and disused, like iron gates swinging open after decades of rust. "The body in that car wasn't mine, Andrew," she whispered, her amber eyes locking onto his with a devastating clarity. "It was the nanny you hired while I was away visiting my sick mother. She wore my coat that night. And when I came back to the estate, broken and unrecognizable from the crash that nearly took my own life... Evelyn was waiting at the gates."
