Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven

Within ten minutes of Clara and Dr. Harrison’s removal, the chaotic atmosphere of the third-floor corridor was replaced by an almost surreal level of absolute, deferential calm.
Raymond had personally escorted Emily to the hospital’s private VIP maternity suite—a sprawling, sunlit room equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring technology, plush velvet armchairs, and a dedicated team of the hospital’s top obstetricians who stood quietly near the door, awaiting further instructions.
Emily lay comfortably against a mound of soft pillows, sipping warm ginger tea from a porcelain cup while an electronic fetal monitor hummed a steady, reassuring whoosh-whoosh rhythm, confirming her baby’s healthy heartbeat.
Raymond sat in an armchair beside the bed, holding a warm cup of coffee, his stern expression softening as he looked at her.
"Are you feeling better, Emily?" Raymond asked gently. "Dr. Vance—the real one, our chief of maternal medicine—says the contractions were brought on by acute stress and physical agitation. But the baby is entirely stable."
"I'm much better now that you're here, Uncle Raymond," Emily sighed, closing her eyes for a brief second. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't answered my call. I thought... I thought they were going to win."
"They never stood a chance, my dear," Raymond said, taking a sip of his coffee. "From the moment my late nephew Thomas married you, you became a cherished part of this family. Thomas loved you deeply, and before he passed away, he made me promise that no matter what happened to him, I would ensure you and his child were protected from the vultures in our bloodline."
Emily felt a warm tear slip down her cheek. "Thomas always said you were the only person in the family with a real spine."
"Thomas was a wise man," Raymond smiled warmly. "Which is why it astounds me that Clara and her faction thought they could execute a hostile takeover of my family tree through your maternity chart."
He set his coffee cup down on the bedside table and leaned forward, his tone turning serious and businesslike.
"Now, Emily. We need to talk about your living arrangements. Staying alone in that suburban cottage while heavily pregnant and exposed to Clara’s harassment is no longer an option. Starting today, you are moving into the East Wing of the main Vance estate. I have private security stationed around the clock, a personal chef, and a dedicated medical team on standby."
Emily hesitated, her fingers tracing the rim of her teacup. "Uncle Raymond, I don't want to be a burden. I can take care of myself—"
May you like
"You are carrying the sole continuation of Thomas’s legacy, Emily. You are not a burden; you are the sovereign heart of our household," Raymond interrupted, leaving no room for argument. "Besides, the estate has desperately needed a touch of genuine warmth ever since my own children moved abroad. Consider it a command from the patriarch."
Emily couldn't help the small, genuine smile that broke across her face. "Alright, Uncle Raymond. I surrender."
