Chapter 6 - The Estate Sanctuary

Three days after the incident at St. Jude Memorial Hospital, Emily was officially discharged and transferred directly to the East Wing of the magnificent Vance estate—a sprawling, ivy-covered stone manor nestled amidst fifty private acres of rolling green hills outside the city.

The transition was like stepping into another universe.

Her bedroom in the East Wing was larger than her entire former apartment, featuring soaring vaulted ceilings, a king-sized canopy bed draped in fine silk, and massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a serene private rose garden. A personal maternity nurse named Sarah—a kind, middle-aged woman with decades of neonatal experience—had been assigned to check her vitals twice daily and ensure she was resting properly.

On a bright, crisp Tuesday afternoon, Emily sat in a plush velvet armchair by the window, reading a book on infant development while sipping fresh lemonade.

A soft knock echoed against the heavy oak door.

"Come in," Emily called out softly.

The door swung open, and Raymond stepped inside, holding a small, flat wooden box carved with intricate ivy patterns. He wore a comfortable gray cardigan over his shirt, looking less like a terrifying corporate titan and more like a proud grandfather.

"I hope I’m not interrupting your reading, my dear," Raymond smiled, walking across the Persian rug toward her.

"Not at all, Uncle Raymond," Emily said, setting her book down on the side table. "Just catching up on sleep schedules. What’s in the box?"

Raymond pulled up a chair opposite her and placed the wooden box gently on her lap. "Open it."

Curious, Emily unlatched the brass clasp and lifted the hinged lid.

Inside, resting on a bed of dark blue velvet, was a heavy, antique gold pocket watch engraved with the initials T.V.—Thomas Vance. Beside it lay a set of legal documents bearing the official stamp of the state probate court.

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up at Raymond, her eyes swimming with sudden tears. "Is this...?"

"Thomas’s personal pocket watch," Raymond said softly. "And alongside it, the fully executed, unalterable codicil to our family trust. As of this morning, all legal challenges mounted by Clara’s faction have been permanently dismissed by the federal court. The family estate, the foundation grants, and the primary trust distributions are now locked securely under your unborn child’s name, with you as the sole executive trustee."

Emily reached into the box, her trembling fingers brushing the cool metal of the antique watch. "I don't know what to say, Uncle Raymond. You didn't have to go to such lengths..."

"I didn't go to lengths, Emily. I simply restored order to a house that had briefly forgotten its honor," Raymond corrected gently. "Thomas would have done the same for me—or for any of us. You are a Vance now. And the Vances take care of their own."
