Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Clara

While Emily enjoyed the absolute sanctuary of the Vance estate, the real world was delivering a swift, merciless reckoning to the people who had tried to destroy her.
Clara Vance sat in the stark, fluorescent-lit holding cell of the downtown precinct, dressed no longer in her designer magenta suit, but in a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. Her hair, usually held in an immaculate ponytail, was falling out in messy strands around her face. Her acrylic nails were broken, and her mascara was smeared across her cheeks from hours of hysterical weeping.
The heavy metal door clicked open, and her father, Arthur Vance—a frail, aging man whose political and corporate influence had just been systematically dismantled by Raymond—stepped into the visiting booth.
Clara bolted from the metal stool, throwing herself against the reinforced glass partition, slamming her palms against the surface.
"Dad! Dad, you have to get me out of here!" Clara shrieked, her voice cracking into a desperate wail. "Raymond is insane! He’s freezing our accounts, he’s cutting off our dividends, and his lawyers are trying to give me fifteen years for a simple family dispute!"
Arthur stood on the other side of the glass, his shoulders slumped, looking older and weaker than he ever had in his life. He stared at his daughter with a mixture of profound disappointment and cold fury.
"There is no 'getting out,' Clara," Arthur said, his voice flat and dead. "Raymond has total control of the board. He called an emergency shareholders' meeting yesterday morning and stripped me of every directorship I held. Our family trust has been dissolved, our assets are tied up in federal litigation, and not a single attorney in the state is willing to touch your case for fear of crossing Raymond Vance."
Clara’s jaw dropped. She shook her head violently. "No... no, that’s impossible! We're Vances! We control the board! We control the money!"
"We controlled nothing," Arthur corrected bitterly. "We were merely tenants living in a house built by Raymond’s vision. And you just tried to burn the foundation down over your own petty greed."
He turned his back on the glass partition, refusing to look at her any longer.

"Dad! Don't leave me here! Dad!" Clara screamed, pounding her fists against the glass as the guards stepped forward to escort her back to her cell.
Her multi-million-dollar lifestyle, her social standing, and her arrogant delusions of grandeur had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only the cold, unyielding reality of a prisoner who had forgotten her place.
