Chapter 1 - The Cold Hospital Room

The sterile, fluorescent lights of St. Jude Memorial Hospital hummed a monotonous tune, casting an antiseptic glow across room 404. Mark Vance sat on the edge of the stiff hospital bed, his broad shoulders slumped, staring at a sheet of white paper as if it were venomous. The hospital had just delivered the results of the paternity test he had requested following the premature birth of their baby boy, Leo—a birth that had already brought enough emotional strain to tear a family apart. But nothing could have prepared Mark for the devastating verdict printed in bold, undeniable black ink: Biological Paternity Probability: 0%.
Mark threw the report onto the bed, the paper fluttering down like a dead leaf. "He’s not mine," he snarled, his voice cracking with a mixture of profound grief and toxic fury. The accusation hung in the small, stifling room like a loaded gun.
Emily stood by the window, her body still weak from a grueling delivery and emergency C-section just three days prior. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow from lack of sleep. When Mark threw the paper, her hands shook uncontrollably as she picked it up, her mind struggling to process the impossible words. Not mine. It didn't make sense. She had loved Mark with every fiber of her being; she had never so much as looked at another man. But as her tear-filled eyes scanned the medical headings, her gaze dropped to the bottom of the document where the applicant identification copy was stapled.

There was a photo of her face, younger, with different hair. But it wasn't a copy of her current passport or hospital intake badge.
Her face suddenly hardened, all the sadness instantly replaced by a sharp, calculating realization. "This is my old driver’s license," she whispered, her voice dropping an octave as a cold realization settled into her bones.
