Chapter 7 - The Fallout

Two days later, the official hospital-certified genetic report was delivered directly to Mark by Dr. Harrison himself.

Mark sat in the armchair by the window, the morning sunlight catching the crisp white pages. He read the summary twice, his heart hammering against his ribs not with fear, but with an overwhelming wave of relief and burning shame.

Biological Paternity Probability: 99.999%.

Leo was his. Flesh of his flesh, blood of his blood. The baby sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside Emily’s bed was unquestionably his son.

Mark folded the paper, stood up, and walked slowly over to Emily’s bedside. Emily was resting, her eyes open, watching him with a quiet, guarded expression. She didn't smile. She didn't reach out. The trauma of the accusation—the sheer cruelty of having her fidelity questioned on the heels of major surgery—had left a deep, jagged scar that a piece of paper couldn't instantly heal.

"Em," Mark choked out, his voice thick with tears as he sank to his knees beside her hospital bed, burying his face in the sheets near her hands. "I am so sorry. God help me, I was a fool. I let my mother poison my mind when I should have trusted you blindly."

Emily looked down at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You doubted me, Mark. The second that paper landed on the bed, instead of looking at me and knowing my character, you believed the worst."

"I know," Mark wept softly, pressing his forehead against her blanket. "I failed you. But I swear to you, I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you and Leo. Mom is out of our lives completely. I’ve already changed the locks on the house, canceled her access to our accounts, and filed a formal police report for identity theft and mail fraud."

Emily was silent for a long moment, listening to the steady breathing of their newborn son across the room. Slowly, she lifted her hand and rested it gently on Mark’s head. "We have a lot of rebuilding to do, Mark. But for Leo’s sake... we start today."
