Chapter 8 - The Price of Malice

Legal consequences for Margaret Vance arrived with swift, unyielding severity. When the police department investigated Mark’s formal complaint regarding the stolen driver’s license and the bribery of the hospital lab technician, they uncovered a disturbing digital paper trail. Margaret had not only orchestrated the mail-in DNA scam, but she had also attempted to contact several local family law attorneys weeks prior to inquire about emergency grandparent custody petitions based on fabricated claims of parental unfitness.

The bribe recipient—the twenty-year-old lab trainee at St. Jude Memorial—was arrested, confessed immediately under interrogation, and named Margaret as the mastermind behind the unauthorized cheek swab extraction.

The district attorney’s office filed formal criminal charges against Margaret: felony identity theft, tampering with medical records, conspiracy, and commercial bribery.

When Margaret was arraigned in municipal court, she expected Mark to show up in the gallery, desperate to bail her out and smooth things over as he had always done when family disputes boiled over. Instead, the courtroom benches were entirely empty of Vance family support. Mark didn't attend the hearing. He didn't post bail. Margaret spent her first night behind bars in a holding cell, her grandiose illusions of matriarchal power collapsing into the cold reality of a criminal defendant facing prison time.
