Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception

The silence in room 404 grew so dense it felt physical. Mark looked from his wife to his mother, the anger in his chest giving way to a sickening, cold confusion. "Mom... what is she talking about? Did you order an independent test?"
Margaret scoffed, throwing her hands up in dramatic disbelief. "Mark, listen to yourself! Listen to her! She’s caught red-handed cheating on you, and now she’s spinning some wild conspiracy theory about me stealing wallets and forging tests to save her own skin! I am your mother! I only wanted to protect you from a woman who clearly couldn't keep her vows!"
"If I cheated, Margaret, why would you need to use a stolen ID from two years ago to test the baby?" Emily countered sharply, stepping closer to the bed despite her physical weakness. "When a hospital conducts a routine paternity test for a newborn, they use current hospital intake IDs, wristbands, and face-to-face verification with both parents present. They don't use an expired driver’s license from a private, third-party mail-in genetic testing kit unless someone purposely submitted those samples outside official hospital channels."
Mark blinked, his legal mind—he worked as a corporate compliance analyst—suddenly latching onto the technicality. He snatched the paper back from Emily’s hands and stared at the letterhead. It wasn't St. Jude Memorial’s lab report. It was a secondary, private consumer DNA company—Apex GeneCorp—headquartered three states away.
"Wait a minute," Mark muttered, his eyes scanning the fine print. "This sample wasn't processed by the hospital. This was a mail-in kit registered online three weeks ago."

"And who was in our house three weeks ago when I was admitted for bed rest?" Emily asked quietly. "Who had access to Leo’s newborn cheek swab samples before they were officially logged into the hospital’s pediatric database?"
Mark slowly turned his head toward his mother. Margaret’s face had lost all its color, the carefully cultivated facade of the pious, loving matriarch cracking down the middle to reveal something desperate and cornered.
