Chapter 3 - The Expulsion

The glass doors of Carter Development’s corporate headquarters slid open with a soft hiss. Emily and Ethan walked side by side into the sprawling marble lobby, the echoes of their footsteps drawing the curious glances of receptionists and junior executives alike.
Emily’s phone was buzzing incessantly in her pocket—dozens of missed calls from her father, her aunt, and half the board of directors. She pulled the device out, powered it down completely, and dropped it into her handbag.
"Floor forty-two," Ethan said, pressing the elevator button.
When the private elevator dinged and opened onto the executive floor, Richard Carter was already waiting outside his office. His face was pale with fury, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. Standing beside him was corporate legal counsel, holding a thick leather folder.
"Emily," Richard barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "Explain yourself this instant."
Emily stepped out of the elevator, her shoulders squared, her chin held high. The timid, compliant daughter who used to cry over missed birthdays was gone, replaced by a woman who had finally found her backbone.
"There’s nothing to explain, Dad," Emily said steadily. "I’m not marrying James. And I’m resigning from any active role in Carter Development."
Richard let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Resigning? You think this is a game? You are a Carter! Your life, your wealth, your very existence is funded by the empire I built from the ground up! You think you can throw away a multi-billion-dollar alliance for a glorified bodyguard?"
He turned his blazing glare onto Ethan, stepping up to him. "And you. You breached your contract, kidnapped my daughter, and thought you’d get away with it? I’ll have you blacklisted across every continent. You won't even be able to get a job guarding a convenience store."
Ethan didn't blink. He met Richard’s furious gaze with absolute, unshakeable composure. "I didn't kidnap anyone, Mr. Carter. Your daughter made her choice. And for the record, I resigned from my post five minutes ago."
Richard’s face twisted in disgust. He turned back to Emily, his voice dripping with venom. "If you walk through those elevator doors with him right now, Emily, you are dead to me. No trust fund. No inheritance. Not a single penny of my money will ever touch your hands again. You will be cut off completely, effective immediately."
The silence in the executive hallway was absolute. The corporate lawyer shifted uncomfortably, looking down at his leather folder.
Emily looked at her father—the man who had bought her expensive cars instead of presence, who measured love in stock options and real estate portfolios, and who viewed her as nothing more than a chess piece in his corporate dominance.
She reached down, touching the simple gold band resting on her left ring finger.
"Keep your money, Dad," Emily said, her voice clear and unwavering. "I’ve spent my whole life drowning in it anyway."

Without another word, Emily turned, took Ethan’s hand, and walked back into the elevator. As the doors slowly slid shut, she saw her father’s face contort in absolute shock—a man who believed every person had a price, realizing for the first time that his daughter was priceless.
