Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

That evening, the atmosphere in the small South End apartment was suffocating. Ethan sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at a piece of paper in his hands. It was the official termination notice from his employer, citing "sudden corporate restructuring and downsizing."
Emily stood by the kitchen counter, her hands trembling as she held a mug of untouched tea.
"They bought the parent company, didn't they?" Ethan asked quietly, not looking up from the paper.
Emily swallowed hard, walking over to place a hand on his shoulder. "Ethan, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault. If I had just stayed, if I had just married James like my father wanted—"
Ethan stood up abruptly, turning to face her. His dark eyes were fierce, filled with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
"Don't you ever say that," Ethan said firmly, gripping her shoulders. "Marrying James Whitmore would be a life sentence in a gilded tomb. I didn't pull you out of that house so you could sacrifice yourself to save my job."
"But what are we going to do?" Emily’s voice broke, tears welling in her eyes for the first time in months. "My father controls everything. He has infinite money, infinite power. We can't fight an invisible giant forever."
Ethan reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "We don't need to fight his empire, Emily. We just need to expose it."
Emily frowned. "Expose what?"
"Your father didn't build Carter Development on clean ground," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a serious whisper. "During my time as his security detail, I saw things. Financial ledgers locked in his private safe that never crossed the accountants' desks. Land acquisitions in the Wetlands district obtained through illegal zoning bribes and intimidation."
Emily stared at him in shock. "My father... illegal bribes?"
"More than bribes," Ethan said. "When you reach the top of the billionaire food chain, you don't just bend the rules—you break them entirely. If we can get into his private office and retrieve those physical ledgers from his wall safe, we have all the leverage we need to break his hold over us permanently."
Emily’s heart raced. Breaking into her father’s fortress—the limestone mansion guarded by state-of-the-art surveillance and private security teams—was an act of sheer madness.
And yet, looking into Ethan’s steady, determined eyes, she knew it was the only way out.
"The annual Carter Development charity gala is next Friday," Emily whispered, a dangerous resolve taking root in her chest. "My father hosts it at the grand ballroom downtown. Everyone in high society will be there—including my father. His mansion will be practically empty."

Ethan smiled grimly. "Then we crash the party."
