Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Richard Carter looked from the open safe to the leather ledger in Ethan’s hand, and finally to his daughter standing beside him. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying rage.
"You arrogant, ungrateful little thief," Richard hissed, taking a step forward. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone. "I’m calling the police. You’re both going away for grand larceny and trespassing for the rest of your lives."
Emily didn't flinch. She stepped forward, placing herself between her father and Ethan, her eyes burning with a fierce, independent fire she had inherited from him—but weaponized for justice instead of greed.
"Go ahead, Dad," Emily said, her voice steady and clear. "Call the police. Tell them to bring the SEC and the investigative reporters waiting outside the charity gala. Let’s explain to them what’s inside this ledger and this flash drive."
Richard froze. His thumb hovered over the screen of his phone. His sharp eyes darted to the flash drive in Ethan’s hand.
"You wouldn't," Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You’d destroy your own family name? Everything I built—it’s yours, Emily! All of it was going to be yours!"
"I don't want your empire, Dad," Emily said, her voice breaking slightly, filled with years of accumulated sorrow. "You never gave me a family. You gave me limestone walls, empty chairs, and a price tag. You thought you could buy me, control me, and break the man I love. But you were wrong."
Ethan stepped up beside her, wrapping a strong arm around her waist, pulling her close. He looked at Richard with calm, unshakable authority.
"The game is over, Mr. Carter," Ethan said quietly. "You can either let us walk out of here right now with our lives and our freedom, or we hand this evidence directly to the federal authorities before midnight. Your choice."
Richard stood in the center of the dark study, his chest heaving. The mighty billionaire, the man who had crushed every competitor in his path for decades, looked suddenly old, tired, and defeated. He stared at his daughter—the woman he had tried to reduce to a corporate asset—and realized for the first time that she was entirely beyond his control.
Slowly, Richard lowered his phone. He turned his head away, staring out the dark window toward the empty driveway.
"Get out of my sight," Richard muttered, his voice hollow. "And don't ever let me see your faces again."

Without another word, Emily and Ethan turned and walked out of the limestone mansion, stepping into the cool night air together, finally free.
