Chapter 7 - The Heist of the Century

The grand ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel glittered under thousands of crystal chandeliers. High-society elites, politicians, and corporate titans mingled in expensive tuxedos and designer gowns, sipping champagne and celebrating the unstoppable dominance of Carter Development.

Standing near the edge of the room, impeccably dressed in a classic black tuxedo, was James Whitmore, scanning the crowd with a self-satisfied smirk.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.

A hush fell over the room. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.

Walking through the doors, hand in hand, were Emily Carter and Ethan Brooks.

Emily wore a breathtaking, blood-red silk gown that caught the light with every step, her hair cascading in soft waves over her shoulders. Beside her, Ethan wore a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding posture. They didn't look like outcasts or impoverished runaways; they looked like royalty.

Richard Carter froze mid-conversation with a city senator, his wine glass halting halfway to his mouth. His face drained of color, replaced by an expression of murderous rage.

Before Richard could storm across the room, Emily raised her hand, flashing the simple gold band on her finger under the bright lights for all of Boston society to see. Then, with a cool, confident smile, she and Ethan turned around and slipped back out through the side exit before security could even react.

"That was close," Ethan muttered as they sprinted down the dimly lit service corridor toward the underground parking garage.

"My father is going to have a heart attack," Emily laughed breathlessly, her heart pounding with an intoxicating rush of adrenaline.

They didn't waste a second. Slipping into a rented sedan parked in the alley, Ethan drove straight toward the limestone mansion outside Boston.

As predicted, the estate was virtually deserted. The security guards were either stationed at the gala downtown or patrolling the front perimeter. Using his insider knowledge of the estate’s blind spots, Ethan scaled the ivy-covered rear wall, picked the reinforced side door lock in under ten seconds, and led Emily silently into the familiar, echoing hallways of her childhood.

They moved like ghosts through the dark, opulent corridors until they reached Richard Carter’s private study.

Ethan pulled a specialized electronic override device from his jacket pocket and connected it to the digital keypad of the heavy wall safe hidden behind a mahogany oil painting.

*Bip. Bip. Whirrr.*

The heavy steel door swung open with a soft click.

Inside weren't just stacks of cash or jewelry; there was a thick, leather-bound ledger labeled *Project Wetlands: Confidential* alongside a secure flash drive containing encrypted email archives detailing illegal land grabs, municipal bribery, and corporate extortion.

"Got it," Ethan whispered, snatching the ledger and the flash drive.

Suddenly, the study door flew open.

Standing in the doorway, panting slightly and glaring with unadulterated fury, was Richard Carter.
