Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

Winter descended upon Boston with a biting frost that turned the cobblestone streets into sheets of ice. Inside the modest South End apartment, Emily and Ethan had built a warm, loving sanctuary. Ethan had secured a job as a night manager at a bustling downtown logistics warehouse—honest, hard work that required long hours but kept food on the table. Emily had taken a position as an assistant curator at a small, independent art gallery near the harbor, where her keen eye and sharp intellect quickly earned the respect of the owner.
They weren't wealthy, but they were happy.
Until the afternoon James Whitmore walked into the art gallery.
Emily was standing on a wooden step-stool, carefully adjusting the lighting on a minimalist watercolor painting, when the familiar chime of the gallery door rang out. She turned her head, expecting a regular patron or her boss, but her breath caught in her throat.
James Whitmore stood in the center of the polished hardwood floor, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal overcoat, his blond hair styled to perfection. He looked around the modest, brightly lit room with undisguised contempt, as if stepping into a low-end boutique.
"Can I help you?" Emily asked, stepping down from the stool and wiping her hands on her apron.
James turned his gaze toward her, a predatory smirk playing on his lips. He walked slowly toward her, his leather shoes clicking against the floor.
"Well, well, well," James purred, stopping a few feet away. "If it isn't the disgraced heiress. Who knew the great Emily Carter possessed such rustic charm? Working for minimum wage among starving artists. Your father must be so proud."
Emily crossed her arms, her expression hardening. "If you’re here to buy a piece of art, James, I can direct you to our catalog. If you’re here to gloat, you can save your breath and walk right back out that door."
James chuckled, stepping closer. "I’m not here to buy art, Emily. I’m here to deliver a message from your father. Richard is growing tired of this little game of yours. The Carter-Whitmore merger is moving forward, and the press is starting to ask questions about why his only daughter has vanished from high society."
"Tell my father I’m not interested," Emily said coldly. "I’m happy where I am."
James’s smirk vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "Happy? You think you’re happy living in a rat-infested apartment with a washed-up mercenary? Let me enlighten you, Emily. Your father didn't just cut you off financially. He’s systematically destroying Ethan’s life."
Emily’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
James reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded document, tossing it carelessly onto the front desk. "Your boyfriend’s new employer—that little logistics warehouse downtown? Richard bought a controlling stake in the parent company this morning. By tomorrow morning, Ethan’s department is being restructured, and he’ll be handed his pink slip. No references, no severance, no future."
Emily gasped, stepping forward. "You wouldn't."
"We already have," James smiled, his eyes gleaming with malice. "Your father holds all the cards, Emily. You can’t fight an empire with love and minimum wage. Come back willingly to the engagement party next week, apologize to your father, and marry me like you were supposed to. Do that, and I’ll make sure Ethan gets a clean record and a severance check large enough to disappear forever."
May you like
James turned on his heel, offering a mocking wave over his shoulder as he walked out the door. "Think about it, Emily. You’re the one destroying him by staying."
