Chapter 1 - The Echo of Footsteps at Terminal 3

The hum of the arrivals terminal at Chicago O'Hare was a cacophony of rolling luggage wheels, multilingual greetings, and the muffled announcements of delayed flights. But to Grace, the only sound that mattered was the rapid, rhythmic patter of tiny shoes racing across the polished terrazzo floor.
"Mommy!"
Three small voices pierced through the ambient noise like rays of sunlight breaking through a heavy storm. Grace’s breath caught in her throat. The heavy leather handbag slipped from her shoulder, hitting the floor with a dull thud, but she didn't care. She dropped straight to her knees, opening her arms wide just as a whirlwind of motion enveloped her.
"I missed you so much..." Grace sobbed, her voice instantly breaking as three small bodies crashed into her embrace.
The oldest, five-year-old Chloe, buried her face deep against the crook of Grace’s neck, wrapping her arms tightly around her mother's shoulders. Middle sister Maya clung frantically to the folds of Grace’s woolen coat, refusing to let go. And the youngest, two-year-old Lily, snuggled into her lap, her small hand reaching up to touch Grace's cheek.
"Mommy..." Lily whispered, her big, round eyes shimmering with tears of relief.
Grace kissed their hair one by one, her tears mixing with the stray curls of her daughters. For five long years, she had carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, fighting battles in secret, living in the shadows, and enduring unspeakable heartbreak—all for this exact moment.
"I missed you every single day," Grace whispered fiercely, holding them so close she could feel the steady, rapid beat of their little hearts. "My babies. My whole world."
The nanny who had accompanied them on the long international flight from Zurich stood a few paces back, offering a sympathetic, tearful smile before wheeling the remaining suitcases toward the exit. Grace pulled back slightly, checking their coats, smoothing their hair, marveling at how much they had grown since she had last seen them during a agonizingly brief video call two weeks ago.
Then, the heavy automatic glass doors of the VIP terminal slid open with a soft hiss.
A tall, impeccably tailored figure stepped out into the bustling arrivals hall. Nathan Vance. At thirty-six, his sharp jawline was slightly hardened by years of corporate dominance, his dark hair neatly styled, and his posture radiating the cold, unyielding authority of a billionaire real estate mogul. Walking right beside him, holding his arm with an easy, proprietary familiarity, was a striking woman dressed in a sharp cobalt-blue designer suit. Claire Sterling.
Nathan scanned the crowd, his eyes sharp and analytical, until they landed on the emotional cluster of children near the pillar.
He stopped dead in his tracks. His boots locked onto the terrazzo floor as if they had hit wet cement.
Claire stumbled slightly against his arm, nearly dropping her designer handbag. "Nathan? What is it? Why did you stop?" she whispered, her voice laced with sudden irritation.
Nathan didn't answer her. His gaze shifted slowly from Chloe to Maya, then down to little Lily, before rising to meet the face of the woman kneeling on the floor holding them.

The color drained from Nathan's face, leaving him looking as pale as a ghost. His breath hitched in his throat, and the world around him seemed to mute into absolute silence.
"Grace..." Nathan breathed out, the name tearing from his chest like an old wound ripping open. His eyes darted back to the three little girls. "Grace... who are those girls?"
