Chapter 9 - A New Dawn in the Garden

By late afternoon, the tension of the corporate boardroom had dissolved into the golden, warm sunlight of the Vance estate gardens. The autumn leaves were turning brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, fluttering down softly onto the manicured emerald lawns.
Grace sat on a white wrought-iron bench beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient weeping willow, watching Chloe, Maya, and Lily play a game of tag with the estate's golden retriever. The girls' bright, musical laughter echoed across the garden, chasing away the last lingering shadows of their nomadic, frightened past.
Footsteps crunched gently on the gravel pathway behind her. Grace didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
Nathan walked up quietly, holding a light woolen shawl. He draped it gently around Grace’s shoulders, his fingers brushing her arm with a soft, lingering warmth.
"You heard about the boardroom?" Grace asked quietly, looking out at the children.
"Word travels fast when you threaten to fire half the executive board before lunch," Nathan smiled faintly, sitting down beside her on the bench. "Arthur Sterling submitted his resignation at 11:45 AM. The rest of them fell completely in line."
Grace turned her head, looking at him with a mix of amusement and respect. "You didn't have to threaten their livelihoods for us, Nathan."
"I would burn this entire corporation to ash before I ever let anyone question my family again," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a fierce, absolute sincerity. He turned to face her fully, taking her small hand in his large, warm palm. "Grace... I know I can't rewrite the last five years. I can't give you back the nights you cried alone in Switzerland, and I can't give myself the privilege of watching our daughters take their first steps."
Grace’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, but she didn't pull her hand away.
"But I can spend every single day of the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry anything alone again," Nathan continued, his voice trembling slightly. "Will you... will you give us a real chance? Not just as co-parents, but as a family? Will you marry me—properly this time, in the light, with no secrets and no shadows?"
Grace looked deep into his eyes. She saw the pain of the past, the fierce protective love of the present, and the unbreakable promise of the future. The little girl who had run into her arms at the airport terminal came running over just then, holding a yellow autumn leaf, shouting, "Look, Mommy! Look what I found!"

Grace scooped Lily up into her lap, kissing her chubby cheek, before looking back at Nathan. A slow, radiant smile—the first truly unburdened smile she had worn in half a decade—bloomed across her face.
"Yes, Nathan," Grace whispered softly. "Let's come home."
