Chapter 6 - The Vance Estate Revisited

Thirty-six hours later, the sleek black motorcade pulled through the massive wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate in the affluent northern suburbs of Chicago. The sprawling limestone mansion stood like a monument to old money and corporate power, surrounded by manicured lawns, towering oak trees, and private security checkpoints.

Grace stared out the tinted window of the car, her heart tightening. The last time she had driven through those gates, she had been running for her life, fleeing a hostile matriarch and a terrifying vacuum of betrayal. Now, she was returning not as a disgraced fugitive, but as the mother of the estate's true heirs.

Nathan sat in the passenger seat, frequently turning around to check on the girls, who were marveling at the massive television screens and plush leather seats of the customized vehicle.

When the car came to a smooth halt in front of the grand double doors, Nathan rushed out to open Grace’s door, offering his hand. Grace looked at his outstretched hand for a second before stepping out under her own power, ignoring his assistance with polite coldness. Nathan didn't look discouraged; he simply nodded, respecting the boundary she had drawn.

As they walked up the stone steps, the heavy oak doors swung open. Standing in the grand foyer was a line of senior household staff—butlers, housekeepers, and estate managers—looking bewildered and anxious.

At the center of them stood Mrs. Gable, the elderly head housekeeper who had served the Vance family for over thirty years. Mrs. Gable had always been kind to Grace during her brief time at the estate years ago, often slipping her extra vitamins when Grace was exhausted.

Mrs. Gable’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she stepped forward, looking from Nathan to Grace, and then down to the three little girls hiding shyly behind Grace’s coat.

"Mr. Nathan..." Mrs. Gable whispered, her voice trembling. "Is this... are these...?"

"They are my daughters, Mrs. Gable," Nathan announced, his voice ringing proudly through the cavernous marble foyer. He turned to the entire staff, his tone carrying the unyielding authority of the head of the house. "This is Grace, my wife—and these are Chloe, Maya, and Lily, the true heirs to the Vance name. From this moment on, every single person in this household will treat them with the absolute highest level of respect, care, and protection. Anyone who fails to do so will be escorted off the property before the hour is out."

A collective gasp rippled through the staff, quickly followed by murmurs of agreement and warm, welcoming smiles.

Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her eyes filling with tears as she looked at Grace. "Welcome home, madam. Welcome home, little princesses."

Grace felt a tight knot in her chest loosen just a fraction. For the girls, at least, this massive, intimidating castle was about to become a playground of safety and wonder.

That evening, Nathan had the third-floor west wing—previously sealed off and untouched since the day Grace fled—completely renovated and transformed. Gone were the cold, formal antiques; in their place were bright pastel walls, custom dollhouses, soft reading nooks, and three warm, cozy beds draped in silk and cotton.

Grace stood in the doorway of the newly minted nursery, watching Nathan patiently read a bedtime story to the girls, his deep voice adopting silly character accents that made Chloe and Maya burst into giggles. Lily had already fallen asleep against his shoulder, her tiny fist clutching the lapel of his expensive shirt.

Nathan looked up, catching Grace’s reflection in the doorway. He gently transferred sleeping Lily into her crib, kissed her forehead, and walked quietly out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him.

"They're asleep," Nathan whispered, leaning his back against the wall, rubbing his tired eyes.

"Thank you for the room," Grace said quietly, keeping her distance in the hallway. "They love it."

"It's their home, Grace," Nathan replied softly. "Just like it's yours. I've instructed my legal team to immediately update the estate deeds and trust funds. Everything I own is legally split four ways between you and the girls."

"Nathan, stop," Grace sighed, rubbing her temples. "I didn't come back for your money. I came back so my daughters could know their father. Don't try to solve human pain with financial transactions."

Nathan nodded slowly, accepting the rebuke without a word of argument. "I know. I'm just trying to build a floor beneath your feet so you never have to feel like you're falling again."
