Chapter 2 - The Shattered Illusion

Grace’s soft, tear-streaked smile vanished instantly, replaced by a wall of cold, protective armor. She slowly stood up from the floor, keeping the three little girls tucked safely behind the shelter of her coat, her hands resting firmly on Chloe’s shoulders.

The air between them crackled with a sudden, suffocating tension. Several passersby glanced curiously at the expensive-looking businessman frozen in front of a mother and her children, but neither adult noticed the audience.

"Don't do this here, Nathan," Grace said, her voice shaking slightly but carrying a razor-sharp edge. "Not in an airport terminal in front of the children."

Nathan stepped forward, ignoring the curious stares, his dark eyes wide and frantic as he stared down at the little girls. "Answer me, Grace. Who are they?"

Grace straightened her posture, her chin lifting defiantly. She looked directly into the eyes of the man she had loved, lost, and mourned in secret for half a decade.

"They waited five years to meet their father," Grace said clearly, every word dropping like lead weights onto the floor.

Nathan flinched as if he had been physically struck. A muscle feathered in his tight jaw. "Father?" he choked out, the word tasting foreign and impossible on his tongue. "What are you talking about? Whose children are they?"

"They’re yours, Nathan," Grace replied, her voice unwavering.

The impact of her words rippled instantly. Beside him, Claire Sterling dropped Nathan’s arm as if it had suddenly caught fire. Her eyes darted between Nathan and the three little girls, panic instantly flickering across her meticulously made-up face.

Nathan stumbled back half a step, his chest heaving as he shook his head violently. "No. No, that's impossible."

Grace’s eyes filled with hot, furious tears. She had expected shock, anger, even denial, but hearing those words from his lips cut deeper than a knife. "What do you mean, no? Look at them, Nathan! Look at Chloe's eyes, look at Maya's smile! They are your flesh and blood!"

"Grace, you don't understand," Nathan stammered, running a trembling hand through his dark hair, his voice cracking with a terrifying confusion. "Five years ago... when you left the country... you told me the babies didn't survive."

Grace went completely, terrifyingly still. The ambient noise of the airport terminal seemed to vanish into a vacuum.

"I... what?" Grace whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation system.

"The miscarriage," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a desperate, shaking rasp. "After the accident... after the hospital discharged you, you sent me those messages. You told me the twins didn't make it. You said the trauma was too much, that there were complications, and that you couldn't bear to look at me because I represented the tragedy!"

Grace stared at him, her mind spinning wildly as the foundation of her entire life fractured into dust. "Nathan... I never had a miscarriage. I carried these triplets to full term in Switzerland under a medical alias because my life was threatened. I never sent you those messages."

Dead silence fell over the group.

Claire Sterling suddenly looked like she had seen a ghost. Her breath caught, her eyes went wide with sheer terror, and she took two panicked steps backward toward the exit doors.

Grace noticed Claire's reaction instantly. Every warning bell in her maternal instincts screamed at once.

Nathan noticed it too. His head whipped around, his eyes locking onto the woman who had been by his side for the last four years.

Nathan turned slowly toward Claire, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold and dangerous it made nearby travelers shudder.

"Claire," Nathan whispered, taking a menacing step toward her. "What did you tell me?"
