Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Estate

The private executive lounge of O'Hare Airport offered a quiet, soundproof sanctuary away from the chaotic arrivals terminal. Yet inside the glass-walled suite, the air felt heavier than a thunderstorm.
Grace sat on a cream-colored leather sofa, holding little Lily on her lap while Maya and Chloe played quietly with a set of travel coloring books on the glass coffee table nearby. They were resilient children, having lived a nomadic life protected by Grace's fierce devotion, but the tension in the room was palpable even to them.
Nathan sat across from them on the edge of an armchair, his elbows resting on his knees, his face buried in his hands. He hadn't dared to approach the girls yet, terrified that his mere presence would frighten them or that Grace would order him out of the room.
Outside the glass partition, federal airport police and Nathan's corporate legal team were currently detaining Claire Sterling, processing her for wire fraud, identity theft, and malicious interference—crimes that carried heavy prison sentences, especially given the forged medical documents her digital footprint had left behind.
"Grace..." Nathan finally spoke, his voice muffled behind his hands. He slowly raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I know saying 'I'm sorry' doesn't fix five years of hell."
"No, it doesn't," Grace replied steadily, her voice calm but devoid of warmth. She stroked Lily’s dark curls, keeping her eyes fixed on the child. "Do you have any idea what it was like giving birth in a foreign country all alone, Nathan? Without a support system, constantly looking over my shoulder, terrified that your mother's associates or corporate enemies would find us? I had to change our names, move across three different cantons in Switzerland, and work three jobs just to put formula on the table while pregnant with three babies."
Nathan flinched with every word, each sentence acting like a physical lash across his back. He swallowed hard, a tear finally spilling over his eyelashes and cutting a clean path through the stubble on his cheek.
"My mother..." Nathan muttered bitterly. "She was part of it, wasn't she? She hated you from the day we met. She told me you were after the Vance fortune."
"Your mother made it very clear that a penniless orphan like me wasn't fit to carry the Vance name," Grace said, looking up to meet his gaze directly. "She offered me a check to walk away before I even knew I was pregnant. When I refused, the threats started. That's why I ran. I didn't run from you, Nathan—I ran to keep your children alive."
Nathan closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the leather cushion as a deep, shuddering sob racked his frame. "My mother passed away two years ago. Stroke. But I... I spent years believing you abandoned me out of greed. Claire played the loyal, comforting friend, stepping into the void, whispering poison in my ear every time I tried to look back."
"You let her," Grace pointed out, her tone uncompromising. "You let comfort blind you to the truth."
"I did," Nathan whispered hoarsely. He turned his head, his dark eyes slowly drifting toward the three little girls playing quietly by the table. Five-year-old Chloe looked up, tilting her head as she stared at the tall, crying stranger who kept looking at them with such desperate, aching sadness.
"Daddy?" Maya whispered suddenly, tugging on Grace's sleeve and pointing at Nathan. "Is that the man Mommy told us about? The one who lives in the big castle across the ocean?"
May you like
Grace’s breath caught. She had never hidden Nathan's existence from her daughters. She had told them stories of a brave, brilliant man trapped behind castle walls who would one day find them. She never imagined that finding him would look like a battlefield.
Nathan stood up slowly, his legs trembling slightly as he took a tentative step toward the coffee table. He dropped to his knees on the carpet, bringing himself down to their eye level.
