Chapter 2 - The Decryption at Dawn

By 3:30 a.m., the executive war room on the twelfth floor of the Aegis-7 Headquarters in Tysons Corner was fully operational.

Six military cybersecurity analysts, three federal forensic accountants, and two armed CID special agents sat around the thirty-foot glass conference table, illuminated by the cold blue light of encrypted server terminals.

Lisa sat at the head of the table, her left arm secured in a high-grade medical immobilizer sling. Dr. Marcus Sterling, a certified trauma physician and defense contractor, had set her hairline clavicle fracture forty minutes earlier, administering a local nerve block so she could remain fully lucid for the intelligence briefing.

Major David Vance walked to the digital projection display, tapping a wireless command stylus against the glass.

"The preliminary forensic extraction is complete, Mrs. Bennett," Major Vance reported, his deep baritone carrying the gravity of a combat debriefing. "The financial deception executed by Ryan and Evelyn Bennett is not a simple case of domestic fraud. It is an organized, multi-year military embezzlement ring."

A high-resolution network map illuminated the screen.

"Point one," Vance explained, pointing to an offshore banking node in Zurich. "Over the past forty-eight months, Ryan Bennett has systematically diverted three hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars from your joint commercial consulting accounts into three shell corporations registered under his mother’s maiden name."

"Under what authority?" Lisa asked, her voice cold and razor-sharp.

"Counterfeit digital power-of-attorney forms bearing the forged signature of your late father," Vance replied. "Point two: Evelyn’s Fallen Heroes Legacy Foundation is a complete fiction. We audited their eighty-six charitable bank accounts in North Carolina and Virginia. The foundation has never disbursed a single scholarship to a military family. Instead, the funds are being laundered through the death benefit accounts of seven soldiers who were listed as killed-in-action during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2018."

Lisa’s breath seized. "Whose unit were those soldiers in, Major?"

"Ryan’s unit," Vance stated grimly. "The 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. The combat incident was officially classified as a friendly-fire mortar error during a night extraction in the Kunar Province."

Arthur Ross stepped forward, dropping an unsealed red-tabbed classified portfolio onto the table.

"And point three, Lisa," Arthur said, his eyes hard as flint behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "We ran the deep-packet inspection on Ryan’s secondary phone records that were uploaded to your domestic server tonight. Look who he’s been communicating with for eight months."

Lisa leaned over the terminal, scanning the decrypted messaging logs.

The recipient was Chloe Adams—Lisa’s college roommate, her maid of honor, and the Chief Operating Officer of Aegis-7.

The messages revealed an explicit, calculated corporate coup: Chloe had agreed to file an emergency petition for judicial receivership against Aegis-7 on Friday morning, utilizing fabricated affidavits signed by Ryan alleging that Lisa was suffering from severe psychiatric instability following her father’s death. Under the terms of the takeover, Chloe would assume eighty percent of the corporate voting shares, while Ryan and Evelyn would receive a fifteen-million-dollar buyout from a foreign defense conglomerate.

"They weren't just taking my monthly checks, Arthur," Lisa whispered, the monstrous scope of the betrayal settling into her veins like liquid ice. "They were engineering my total destruction."

"It gets worse, Lisa," Major Vance said, lowering his voice into a dangerous, subterranean register. "Look at the primary military witness who survived the Kunar Province mortar strike in 2018—the soldier whose testimony was sealed by the Pentagon review board."

The screen flickered, displaying an active military identification dossier:

SERGEANT FIRST CLASS ETHAN CARTER // US ARMY SPECIAL FORCES // STATUS: CLASSIFIED WITNESS PROTECTION.

Lisa stared at the photograph on the screen.

The blood drained from her face until her skin looked like chalk under the LED lights.

"Ethan..." Lisa choked out, her uninjured hand flying to her mouth. "That’s my brother. They told me Ethan died in Germany five years ago!"

"Ethan didn't die, Lisa," Major Vance revealed. "Ethan discovered that Ryan and Evelyn were selling stolen night-vision optics and military communications arrays to black-market brokers in Kandahar. Ryan orchestrated the mortar strike to silence him, but Ethan survived. And sixty minutes ago, Chloe Adams used her executive keycard to escort an unidentified man matching Ethan’s biometric profile into your research lab on the fifth floor."
