Chapter 4 - The Sunrise Raid on the Estate

At 6:15 a.m., a dense autumn fog rolled off the Potomac River, blanketing the manicured lawns of the Fort Belvoir civilian executive estates in a cold, gray mist.

Inside the four-thousand-square-foot manor, Evelyn Bennett sat at the mahogany dining table wearing a freshly pressed wool sweater, sipping black coffee from an antique porcelain mug, reviewing a printed guest list for the Fallen Heroes Gala.

On the sofa in the adjoining sitting room, Ryan was lounging in his bathrobe, eating a bowl of cereal, watching financial news on the eighty-inch television.

"Lisa’s phone has been off since four in the morning, Mom," Ryan said, tossing his spoon into the bowl. "She probably checked into a hotel in Alexandria to pout. When she comes back for her clothes, tell her the foundation gala fee has increased to ten thousand for the inconvenience."

Evelyn smiled—a thin, cruel smirk of total, uncontested dominance. "A civilian girl will always bend if you apply sufficient pressure, Ryan. Her company is signing the Department of Defense contract on Friday. She has too much to lose to make a scene."

The heavy front double doors of the estate were suddenly blown off their hinges with a deafening, concussive hydraulic roar.

BANG.

The sound of shattering wood and splintering deadbolts echoed through the vaulted foyer, followed instantly by the heavy, rhythmic thud of tactical combat boots against the red-oak floorboards.

"Military Police! Federal Search Warrant! Nobody move!"

Evelyn sprang from her chair, spilling her coffee across the white linen tablecloth. "What on earth is that? Ryan, get your weapon from the study!"

Ryan scrambled to his feet, running into the foyer, his face flushed with panicked fury. "Who authorized this breach? I am Captain Ryan Bennett, United States Army retired! This is a private residence!"

Stepping through the shattered doorway were twelve heavily armed Military Police officers in full tactical battle dress, accompanied by Special Agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Division, led by Major David Vance.

Behind them walked Lisa Bennett, dressed in an immaculate, bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, her left arm immobilized in her black tactical sling, her posture upright, commanding, and absolute.

Walking beside her was Sergeant First Class Ethan Carter, wearing his full Army Special Forces dress uniform, his Silver Star and combat ribbons gleaming beneath the chandelier lights.

Ryan took one look at Ethan’s face and staggered backward three full paces, his knees buckling as if he had been struck by an artillery shell.

"No..." Ryan wheezed, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. "No... Carter... you’re dead... the classified file in Landstuhl—"

"The classified file was forged by your mother, Captain Bennett," Major Vance announced, his voice booming through the vaulted hall like a thunderclap.

Evelyn rushed into the foyer, her face contorting into an ugly, venomous sneer as she pointed her pacing stick at the agents. "David Vance! Are you out of your mind? My late husband was a Brigadier General! I served thirty years on the Command Staff! You have no jurisdiction in this private home!"

Major Vance pulled an unsealed, gold-embossed warrant from his tactical vest, slapping it directly into Evelyn’s chest.

"Evelyn Bennett, Ryan Bennett," Major Vance declared. "Pursuant to the emergency decrees issued at four o'clock this morning by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Armed Forces Military Tribunal under Cause Number 26-AF-9912, you are both under arrest for felony treason, grand military larceny, attempted premeditated murder of military personnel, and forty-eight counts of federal wire fraud."
