Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Ranks

Evelyn raised the ceremonial pacing stick, her knuckles turning white as she lunged toward Lisa. "You ungrateful, civilian parasite! I built this family! I made you respectable in this town!"
Before the brass tip could travel six inches, Ethan moved with the explosive, lethal speed of a veteran Green Beret.
He closed the distance in a single stride, his left hand catching the rosewood shaft, twisting the weapon from Evelyn’s grip with a bone-shattering torque that forced the sixty-six-year-old woman down onto one knee on the hardwood.
Ethan drove the brass tip of the stick into the floorboards, snapping the polished rosewood cleanly in half across his knee, tossing the splintered remnants at Ryan’s feet.
"You disgraced the uniform, Evelyn," Ethan said softly, his dark eyes burning with five years of cold, unyielding justice. "And your war is officially over."
Two female Military Police officers moved in instantly, securing Evelyn’s wrists behind her back with heavy stainless-steel tactical handcuffs.
Ryan fell to his knees on the rug, clutching his head in both hands, weeping in frantic, pathetic terror. "Lisa! Lisa, please! Listen to me! It was my mother's plan! She controlled the bank accounts! She told me we needed the offshore reserves to protect the family from an audit! I love you, Lisa! You’re my wife!"
Lisa walked slowly across the foyer, stopping two feet from where her husband knelt in the dust of his shattered door.
She reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out the platinum-and-diamond wedding band he had placed on her finger four years ago, and dropped it into his open, trembling palm.
"You stood on those stairs and watched your mother strike me with a brass weapon, Ryan," Lisa said, each word falling like an iron deadbolt into place. "You weren't a husband. You were an undercover thief assigned to steal my father's legacy."
Arthur Ross stepped forward, presenting a certified judicial writ of immediate commercial ejectment.

"All personal accounts, luxury vehicles, and military retirement drawing privileges held by Ryan and Evelyn Bennett have been placed under federal receivership," Arthur stated. "The deed to this estate was purchased with Lisa Bennett’s private corporate dividends and is registered under the Aegis-7 Ancestral Trust. You have ten minutes to exit these premises in military transport custody."
As Ryan and Evelyn were marched down the stone driveway in heavy iron chains before forty gathered neighbors and news crews, the morning sun broke over the Potomac River, washing away four years of domestic terror beneath the clean autumn light.
