Chapter 3 - The Breach in the Lab

The fifth-floor research and development wing of Aegis-7 was pitch-black, save for the rhythmic pulsing green LEDs of the sovereign quantum-encryption server banks.
Inside Lab 4, Chloe Adams stood over a high-security terminal, her manicured fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard, attempting to bypass the secondary biometric lockout on the firm’s proprietary Cerberus-9 military firewall code.
Beside her stood a man in a dark tactical jacket, his face shadowed by a low ballcap, a heavy carbon-fiber military duffel bag resting at his feet.
"Hurry up, Chloe!" the man hissed in a raspy, damaged voice. "The automated perimeter sweep cycles every fifteen minutes! If the central node flags our IP address, the entire building locks down!"
"The root password was changed forty-eight hours ago!" Chloe whispered frantically, sweat beading across her forehead. "Ryan swore he had her master master-key passphrase! She must have updated the administrative protocols after the argument with his mother!"
The heavy steel magnetic fire doors of Lab 4 clicked shut with a pneumatic hiss.
The overhead fluorescent surgical lights snapped on in a blinding, concussive flash of white light.
Standing in the center of the doorway was Lisa Bennett.
She was flanked by Major David Vance, four armed CID tactical operators carrying suppressed carbines, and Arthur Ross holding a certified federal search-and-seizure warrant.
Chloe gasped, jumping backward against the server rack, knocking a diagnostic monitor onto the floorboards with a shattering crash. "Lisa! Oh God... Lisa, I can explain! We were just running an emergency diagnostic on the server security—"
"Save your breath, Chloe," Lisa said, her voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans with the lethal precision of a laser. "Your access privileges were terminated at two-fifteen this morning when the forensic audit verified your sixteen offshore wire transfers from Ryan’s Cayman shell company."
The man in the ballcap turned slowly.
He lifted his head, his hands held visible and open at his sides.
Beneath the shadow of the cap was a face carved by deep shrapnel scars along the left jawline, with wide, dark hazel eyes that carried the exact, unforgettable shape of Lisa’s own eyes.
"Lisa..." the man whispered, his voice cracking with an unbearable, raw agony.
Lisa’s heart stopped. She took two trembling steps forward, her eyes locking onto the scars across his cheek.
"Ethan?" Lisa breathed, tears spilling freely over her lashes. "Ethan... you're alive?"
Ethan took off his cap, dropping it to the floor. "They told me you were in on it, Lisa. When I woke up in the military hospital in Landstuhl, Evelyn Bennett visited my room in full uniform. She told me that you and Ryan were laundering the black-market profits through your new software company. She told me that if I ever returned to the United States, the federal marshals would arrest you for treason."
"She lied to you, Ethan," Lisa wept, reaching out with her uninjured hand, pulling her brother into a fierce, desperate embrace against her chest. "They built my whole life on a cage of stolen blood."
Ethan wrapped his strong, scarred arms around his sister, burying his face into her shoulder as five years of manufactured isolation and terror washed away beneath the fluorescent lights.

Major Vance stepped forward, nodding to his tactical team.
"Special Agents, secure Chloe Adams," Vance commanded. "And notify the Provost Marshal's Office at Fort Belvoir. We are rolling on the Bennett estate at sunrise."
