Chapter 7 - The Visitor in the Brig

The military detention facility at Quantico smelled of industrial floor wax, cold concrete, and bitter, rotting pride.

Evelyn Bennett sat on the edge of a steel cot bolted to the wall of her solitary cell, wearing a standard olive-drab institutional jumpsuit.

Her styled silver hair was unkempt and stringy; her manicured vanity had been completely stripped away, her wrists and ankles secured with heavy steel transport chains.

The heavy steel slider door buzzed open with a loud hydraulic clank.

Lisa Bennett walked into the cell.

She did not hurry. Her leather heels clicked rhythmically against the concrete with a slow, deliberate cadence. She wore an elegant camel-hair coat over her navy suit, her posture commanding, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.

Evelyn flinched back against the concrete wall, her bloodshot eyes widening in a mixture of feral hatred and visceral terror.

"You came to gloat, you little civilian clerk," Evelyn spat, her voice cracking into a dry, hoarse rasp.

"I came to look at you, Evelyn," Lisa said softly, stopping three paces from the cot. "I wanted to see what thirty years of stolen military honor looked like when the uniform was stripped away."

"I gave my life to the Army!" Evelyn hissed, leaping to her feet, her transport chains rattling violently against the steel belt around her waist. "I built connections in the Pentagon that you couldn't comprehend in three lifetimes! Ryan was destined for the General Staff! You were supposed to be our financial engine, nothing more!"

"You didn't build connections, Evelyn," Lisa replied, her slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with freezing clarity. "You built a criminal syndicate on the graves of seven soldiers from your son's own unit. You stole their death benefits to pay for your country club memberships and your luxury SUVs."

Lisa reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a copy of the morning's unsealed military tribunal verdict.

She dropped the heavy document onto the steel cot.

"The Department of the Army officially stripped you and Ryan of all ranks, pensions, medals, and veteran healthcare benefits forty-five minutes ago," Lisa said. "Your names will be excised from every military registry in this country."

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked down at the dishonorable discharge decrees, her hands shaking so violently that the paper fluttered against her knees.

"And Ryan?" Evelyn whispered, her voice finally breaking into a pathetic whimper.

"Ryan signed a full confession at dawn to avoid the death penalty for wartime treason," Lisa answered quietly. "He will spend the next forty-five years in the federal supermax facility at Florence, Colorado. And you will spend the rest of your life in the military penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth."

Lisa turned her back on the broken matriarch.

"Guard," Lisa called out.

The heavy steel door slid open, and Lisa walked down the echoing corridor into the warm morning sunshine of Virginia, leaving Evelyn Bennett to collapse onto the concrete floor, weeping in the dark where she would remain forever.
