Chapter 3 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around Victoria Sterling’s wrists with a sharp, concussive snap that echoed like a gunshot through the silent ballroom.

“Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for public assault, child endangerment, and the suspected embezzlement of municipal endowment funds,” the Chief of Detectives announced, his voice booming through the hall’s acoustic speakers. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“Get these off me! Do you know who I am?! My father owns half the real estate in this county!” Victoria shrieked, thrashing violently against the officers, her expensive Versace gown tearing as she was dragged backward across the imported marble floor. Her immaculate French twist unraveled, sending blonde hair flying around her sweat-streaked face.

The elites who had spent the evening kissing her ring now averted their eyes, whispering behind their champagne flutes, eager to distance themselves from a sinking ship.

Julian Vance didn't rush to her defense. Instead, he straightened his silk tie, adjusted his cuffs, and walked past the handcuffed socialite without uttering a single word, stepping out toward the terrace as if he had never met her in his life.

Little Maya stood quietly near the base of the grand staircase, watching the spectacle with a solemn, mature composure that defied her six years of age.

A gentle hand rested on her shoulder.

Maya looked up. It wasn't a police officer or a frightened relative. It was Elena Vance—Julian’s estranged younger sister and a brilliant cyber-security attorney who had secretly financed Maya’s grandfather’s patent applications before the Sterling conglomerate buried him in litigation.

“You did well, Maya,” Elena whispered softly, kneeling down to look the little girl in the eye. “Your grandfather would have been very proud.”

“Is it over?” Maya asked, her small fingers clutching the edge of her faded yellow dress.

May you like

“No, sweetheart,” Elena smiled, a fierce, determined light flashing in her eyes. “It’s only just beginning. The gala was her house of cards. Now, we’re going to tear down the entire foundation.”

As the police escort bundled a screaming, hysterical Victoria into the back of an unmarked cruiser outside, the Metropolis Children’s Foundation sign above the ballroom doors flickered, short-circuited, and went completely dark. The night of untouchable privilege was officially over, replaced by the harsh, burning light of absolute accountability.
