Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Century

By mid-winter, the legal proceedings against Victoria Sterling had become the most watched trial in the country.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, legal analysts, and victims of the foundation’s systemic corruption. Victoria sat at the defense table, dressed in a coarse orange jumpsuit, her hair cropped short and stripped of all the artificial dyes, extensions, and high-fashion accessories that had once defined her identity. Her expensive defense attorneys sat beside her, looking thoroughly exhausted, knowing they were defending a lost cause.

The prosecution presented an airtight case: financial audits, secret audio recordings, hacked server logs proving systemic extortion, and eyewitness testimony from dozens of former estate workers whose lives had been ruined by the Sterling family's ruthless litigation.

When little Maya took the witness stand, small and composed, wearing her yellow dress, the courtroom fell into a heavy, respectful hush.

She didn't stammer. She didn't cry. She answered the prosecutor’s questions with absolute, crystal-clear precision, detailing the afternoon of the gala and the countless times she had been threatened for simply walking through the estate's public gardens.

When cross-examination time came, Victoria’s lead attorney stood up, hesitated, looked at the overwhelming wall of digital evidence, and sat back down without asking a single question.

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

The foreman stood up, holding the verdict form with steady hands.

“On all counts of aggravated assault, child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate extortion, how do you find the defendant, Victoria Sterling?”

“Guilty, Your Honor,” the foreman read clearly. “Guilty on all counts.”

Victoria let out a muffled, choked sob, burying her face in her cuffed hands as the bailiff stepped forward to lead her away. The judge’s gavel struck the sound block with a sharp, concussive crack—the final, undeniable sound of justice closing its doors on a life built entirely on lies.
