Chapter 5 - Justice in the Sunlight

Two weeks after the gala disaster, the municipal park behind the public library was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp autumn afternoon.
The rusted playground equipment that had stood neglected for a decade had been completely replaced with a state-of-the-art jungle gym, a secure rubber safety floor, and a bronze plaque near the entrance bearing a simple, beautiful inscription:
The Arthur Sterling Memorial Garden. Dedicated to truth, creativity, and the children of Metropolis.
A small crowd of local residents, journalists, and children had gathered for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
At the center of the ribbon stood six-year-old Maya, wearing a brand-new yellow dress, holding a pair of oversized ceremonial golden scissors. Standing beside her was Elena Vance, holding a bouquet of white wildflowers, and several local community leaders who had finally reclaimed their city from the old-money elites.
Across the park, watching from behind the perimeter fence, stood a disgraced former billionaire in a rumpled suit—Julian Vance, observing the destruction of his family’s legacy with hollow, defeated eyes. He didn't approach. He knew there was nothing left for him here.
Elena glanced toward the fence, met Julian’s gaze for a single fraction of a second, and then turned away, dismissing him completely.
“Are you ready, Maya?” Elena asked softly, looking down at the little girl.
Maya nodded, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face—a smile that carried the warmth of a thousand sunlit rooms.
She raised the golden scissors.
Snip.

The red silk ribbon fell away in two clean pieces, releasing a cloud of colorful balloons into the brilliant blue sky.
The crowd cheered, clapping loudly as Maya ran forward to test the new swings, her laughter ringing out across the park like music—completely free of fear, completely free of the cold shadows of the past.
