Chapter 4 - The Audit of the Century

By Monday morning, the digital footage of Victoria Sterling slapping an orphaned six-year-old girl had amassed forty million views across every major social media platform. The hashtag #MetropolisMonster was trending globally, completely eclipsing the foundation’s PR department’s desperate attempts at damage control.

Inside the sleek, glass-walled executive offices of Sterling Real Estate, the atmosphere was thick with sulfur and panic.

Julian Vance sat at the head of the twenty-seat obsidian conference table, his phone buzzing incessantly with calls from nervous investors, withdrawing board members, and federal regulators. The Metropolis municipal council had already held an emergency midnight session, unanimously voting to freeze all ten million dollars of the foundation’s endowment pending a comprehensive, forensic audit.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Elena Vance strode into the room, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, carrying a thick, leather-bound audit file under her arm. Flanking her were two federal marshals and a senior investigator from the State Attorney General’s office.

Julian looked up, his face twisted in a mixture of fury and desperate calculation. “Elena. What is the meaning of this? You have no jurisdiction to—on whose authority are you—?”

“On the authority of the federal grand jury, Julian,” Elena interrupted smoothly, dropping the heavy file onto the obsidian table with a loud thud.

She pulled out a chair directly opposite her brother, sitting down with calm, unshakeable poise.

“For the past five years, Victoria has been systematically looting the children’s charity accounts to fund her private investments, her offshore accounts, and her family’s real estate acquisitions,” Elena stated, opening the folder to reveal a labyrinth of shell companies and forged signatures. “And guess who signed off as the primary corporate guarantor on every single fraudulent transaction?”

Julian’s face went chalk-white. He looked down at the financial routing numbers visible on the top page—numbers tied directly to his personal signature.

“I was misled… I trusted her… I didn't read every ledger line…” Julian stammered, his aristocratic composure evaporating into thin air.

“Ignorance is not a defense against federal wire fraud and charity embezzlement, Julian,” Elena said coldly, sliding a second set of documents across the table. “You can either cooperate with the Attorney General’s office, hand over your controlling shares in the conglomerate to the restructuring trustees, and spend the next five years in a minimum-security facility… or you can join Victoria in maximum security by sundown.”

Julian stared at the papers. He looked around the empty boardroom, realizing that every ally, every corrupt politician, and every fair-weather friend had already vanished. The empire built on stolen patents, crushed lives, and social bullying had finally collapsed under its own weight.

With trembling hands, Julian picked up a silver fountain pen and signed his name to the surrender agreement.
